The Tasting Meditation (Praxis)

April 14, 2008

You always have some taste in your mouth. Notice this right now. You could use this during a walking meditation, but a better practice is to focus your attention on taste as you eat. Eat slowly, savoring each morsel of food. Whether this is a meal or just a snack, start by saying, “I am doing the tasting meditation.” Then focus on the taste of your food. When distracting thoughts come: note them; silently say, “I am continuing the tasting meditation”; and go back to the meditation. When you’ve finished eating: say, “This is the end of the tasting meditation.”

Next week, I’ll focus on the use of sound in meditation.
