a fable

Once upon a time, on top of a mountain, there lived a Buddha; and there was another Buddha who lived on the side of that same mountain. When people came to the Buddha who lived on top of the mountain and told him there problems, he would say, “The answers are within you;” and he would urge them to look within. When people came to the Buddha who lived on the side of the mountain and told him there problems, he would say, “The answers are in scriptures;” and he would quote scriptures to them.

As time passed, there developed a group of followers of the Buddha who lived on top of the mountain and a group of followers of the Buddha who lived on the side of the mountain. And the two groups argued; each saying: “Our Buddha is the one to follow.” ”Only our Buddha’s teaching is correct.” “Only our Buddha is truly enlightened.”

One day, news arrived of a wandering Buddha, reported to be the wisest of all Buddhas. The arguing followers said, “Now we can settle this.” So the followers of the Buddha who lived on top of the mountain went to the wandering Buddha and said, “Our Buddha teaches us that the answers to all problems are within;” and the wandering Buddha said, “Your Buddha teaches you the truth.”

Then the followers of the Buddha who lived on the side of the mountain went to the wandering Buddha and said, “Our Buddha teaches us that the answers are in scripture;” and the wandering Buddha said, “Your Buddha teaches you the truth.”

And it came to pass that those who heard the wandering Buddha speak to both groups unanimously agreed that the wandering Buddha was no Buddha at all.
