Integrity in Government

April 15, 2011

Recently, I’ve discussed needs and how they relate to global warming and the end of cheap fossil fuel – including the need for integrity. I have written about integrity as an element in my personal code of honor. This posting focuses on the need for integrity in government.

The following is a message I recently sent to President Obama:

As a registered voter, I would like you to know of my deep distress in learning that the USDA has decided to give full non-regulated status to genetically modified (GM) “Roundup Ready” alfalfa. Without regulation, GM alfalfa will spread to non-GM crops, irretrievably contaminating them.

The genetic modification is to make the plant able to withstand Monsanto’s herbicide “Roundup” which contains the deadly toxin glyphosate. Glyphosate is highly toxic to plants and could affect plants close to the treated alfalfa: “Glyphosate exposure could occur through aerial drift, runoff of surface waters containing glyphosate, or leaching of glyphosate into drainage systems. Plants exposed to glyphosate via aerial drift might experience impaired germination or growth characteristics.”

The quote above is from the USDA’s own report. Attorneys for the Center for Food Safety (CFS) and Earthjustice have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), arguing that the agency’s recent unrestricted approval of genetically engineered (GE), “Roundup Ready” alfalfa was unlawful.

Mr. President, you can either spend millions of tax-payer dollars to defend the USDA’s insanity or you can direct the Secretary of Agriculture to reverse the decision on Monsanto’s GM alfalfa, making the lawsuit unnecessary. The choice is yours. I hope you make the decision that brings integrity back to your administration.

Lest you think I find a lack of integrity only in Democrats, Here’s a video of a recent speech in Congress.
